Is Dillard's a good place to work?

Q: I'm moving to Lincoln, NE and I LOVE clothes and fashion. I'm 20 years old and in college, I'm thinking about applying at Dillard's because they are hiring. I just was wondering if anyone knows if it's a good, fun place to work...I work at Home Depot now, and totally hate it! Please, if you work at Dillard's or know someone that does, please answer my question!

A: I work at Dillards and I will say that it is what you make it. I like selling and I enjoy men's fashion, so most of the time I enjoy working there. I also go in everyday with the attitude that I will engage every customer and attempt to make the most of every sell. If you can do that, then you will do fine. However, I wouldn't say it is a fun place to work. Most everyone B*tches and Moans daily about 1) How dead it is in their dept. 2) How the Sales Goals are unfair 3) The fear of a paycut 4) Someone "stealing" their sale. All are related. Dillard's system of pay is totally to blame for the negative enviroment. It makes you either a "shark" or apathetic. The Sharks have been there for years and will take you out at the knees if you approach a customer within 30 feet of them. That is how they have learned to survive in that system. The apathetic employees have been smacked around by the sharks and they are waiting to be put out of their misery via pay cuts and termination, or waiting for the next job to come through. The key is to focus on your service and sales and not get caught up with all the drama. It can be quite difficult but it can be done. If you are looking for a decent wage and are serious about working, give it a shot. If you are looking for fun and to make friends, keep on looking....
