Q: Citycell is the oldest telco in Bangladesh, the only CDMA operator. Yet it is featuring nowhere near GP, Aktel, Warid Telecom or banglalink. So whats wrong with this company? Citycell has the strongest parent (Singtel). Further all Singtels subsidiaries are giant in their own teritories look at Bharti, Telcomsel, Warid (Pakistan), Optus or Globe. And why is Singtel completely silent about their Bangladesh operation?
A: I have one CityCell connection and many GrameenPhone SIMs. The monthly usage bill of CityCell is cut-throat if we compare other operators. These people in CityCell milked their elite customers back in early to Mid-1990s when they were having exclusive monopoly in the Mobile/Cell phone market. They did not care for middle-class and lower middle-class segment of the Users if you compare minimum Taka 100,000/- (1 Lac) as the price to have a CityCell lines in those days. Now those other operators are in the field (GP, Aktel, Warid Telecom, and Banglalink etc.) CityCell has been deliberately avoided by the crowd since CDMA has its limitations in comparison with the GSM system used by its competitors. Remember how difficult and time consuming their red-tape mechanism would harass you if you wanted to change your hand-set for the reason of having a better set or lost the set? The competitors were giving you one after another attractive package by CityCell was holding its fort tight and keeping its draconian rates and rules intact. As for me I am unable to pay their hefty bills for one connection, whereas I am paying Business Solutions GP Bills regularly since the amounts are not that big in GP. Hope someone in CityCell would note these feedbacks and try to improve their rates and service for their own survival in this competitive market.
